Our Story

Making music for more than four decades...

The Norristown Chorale is a community chorus serving Norristown and the surrounding communities in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania since 1977. We are an SATB ensemble with singers from all walks of life. The Chorale's members find camaraderie, harmony and personal fulfillment in group singing. The Chorale aims to share the beauty of choral music with the community throughout its concert season.

Our History

Beginning with its first rehearsal in a local church in 1977, the Norristown Chorale has brought a rich heritage of choral music to the Montgomery County area. Now more than 50 voices meet weekly during the school year to study, enjoy, and perform sacred and secular music. The Chorale has gained recognition for artistry and high standards while it encourages participation from a broad base of the community.

The Chorale performs a repertoire of choral music spanning the centuries - from early renaissance through contemporary works. A wide variety of music has been presented, from great choral masterworks such as Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah selections, to smaller a capella and accompanied works by various composers throughout the history of music. Popular pieces, madrigals, spirituals, folk songs, and show tunes are also included in the Chorale's repertoire, which numbers over 250 works.

The Chorale has presented major works with the Ambler Symphony Orchestra and Christmas programs with the Pottstown Symphony Orchestra. In addition, it has showcased compositions of local composers and performed arrangements by some of its members.

The Chorale has become an integral part of the Norristown community through performances in schools, churches, hospitals, retirement homes, and other institutions in the greater Norristown and Montgomery County area. Through innovative programs, the Chorale has entertained a growing number of area residents who generously support the annual winter and spring concerts through their attendance and financial support.

     Join Us

Everyone is welcome to join the choir at the beginning of each rehearsal season; September and January. The Chorale's performances usually occur during December and May. There is a deadline for membership to allow sufficient time to learn the music before each performance.

We do have a gentle audition process. Audition information can be found on the Joining the Chorale page.

The musical success of the Chorale is dependent on member faithfulness and diligence. To join the Chorale implies a desire to participate in making great music together with the conductor and your fellow singers and a promise to attend the rehearsals and concerts for the entire semester or performance year.

Rehearsals are held every Tuesday at 7:00 to 9:00 PM from September through May in the Sanctuary of the Reformed Church of the Ascension, 1700 W. Main Street, West Norriton, PA 19403. Free parking is available directly across the street in the county juror's lot.
