New Member General Requirements

General Information and basic requirements to audition for the Norristown Community Chorale.

  • Possess moderate music reading ability as to be able to lean music independently and not exclusively by ear. While not impossible to learn our music by ear, it is much more difficult.
  • Recent experience singing in an ensemble (theatre, community, school, or church choir) will be helpful to your success in our choir.
  • Availability for weekly Tuesday night rehearsals (7:00pm – 9:00pm) from September to December and/or from January to May.
  • As per our attendance policy, agreement to a maximum of three (3) absences permitted in the fall season and four (4) permitted in the spring. After exceeding the allowed absences, you may be asked to sing selected portions of the current program for the Director in order to demonstrate that you aren’t falling behind. Your continuance in the season is the at the discretion of the Director.
  • Singers may be excused by the Director from concerts during concert season for work or family obligations, but singers are normally expected to sing in all concerts per season.

Audition Requirements

  • Moderate music reading ability is recommended.
  • Demonstration of the ability to control your voice as to sing “chorally”.
  • Vocalizing up and down your range on a simple 5-note scale. This will determine if you are singing the correct voice part.
  • Tonal memory exercises. (Listening to 4-note melodies on the piano and then singing them back accurately.)
  • Prepare and perform a song of your choice for the Director from the pieces on the following pages. (2 verses are sufficient) Accompaniment will be provided.
  • Sight-read a song for the Director from the pieces on the following pages. You may be asked sing the melody and/or harmony.
